Girl Guiding in Malaysia Part I > The Beginning of A new Dawn

In 1916 Miss Gertrude Ballard introduced Guiding to a school she was teaching in Malaya.

1917 officially,  the first Girl Guides Company was established by Ms. Gertrude Ballard at the Methodist Girls' School , Kuala Lumpur.Miss Dorothy Prudy was elected as the captain of this company and  assisted by three leaders,with rankings as Lieutenants: Miss Ford, Miss King and Miss Pykett. 

This very first company in Malaya (before 1963, Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore were known as Malaya during the Colonial period) was registered at the Headquarters of Girl Guides in Calcutta, India .It was helped governed  by  YWCA. 

Lady Guillemard was appointed as the President while Madam Cavendish was appointed Commissioner of the Malayan Girl Guides Association.

1919  The Girl Guides company was established in the state of Pulau Pinang, a Northern territory of then Malaya. In 1917,  the Singapore Girl Guide Movement started as a District of the Malayan Girl Guides Association. Their  first Unit was registered at St. Mary's Home. Later, Units were registered at Raffles Girls' School, Singapore Chinese Girls' School and Church of England Zenana Missionary Society School (now St. Margaret's Secondary School). Their  first Brownie Pack was started on Pulau Ubin. 

Mrs J. Cavendish, Chief Commissioner for Malaya and Singapore (1917-1934) donated the Cavendish Shield to stimulate interest in Guiding. Guides from St. Margaret's Secondary School and St. Hilda's Girl's School won the Cavendish Shield for Singapore.

1921Girl Guiding was successfully established in the state of Perak, where the 1st Company was started in the Methodist Girls School, Ipoh.

1920's The first Brownie Pack in Malaya was established in Sekolah Perempuan Kampung Baru, Kuala Lumpur

1923  The establishment of Cadet Girl Guides Pulau Pinang. This company is the first of the cadet category of the Guiding companies in Malaya.

1925 The Ranger Girl Guides Unit was established in Pulau Pinang.

Mrs. P.M. Robinson was elected as the Comissioner of Ranger Girl Guides Unit of  Malaya (Unit Renjer Puteri Malaya) 

1928  The Guiding movement in Malaya was beginning to be prominent hence obtained recognition from the  government then.
